Timeline:

  • 1771 - John Wesley, founder of Methodism, called for volunteers for mission work in America.
  • 1771 - Francis Asbury answered the call and within 45 years he had traveled 270,00 miles on horseback and founded 412 Methodist "societies".
  • 1780 - Asbury came to the area which is now Randolph County, preached in family homes and left converts to the Methodist faith.
  • 1793 - Asheboro founded as county seat of Randolph County.
  • 1834 - Methodists in Asheboro built their first church building, a crude and unpainted structure on 2 acres of land near the site of the present City Cemetery. The congregation was served by itinerant circuit riders.
  • 1861-65 - War Between The States
  • 1880 - Church became part of a "charge" with a full time minister. Membership was twenty-one adults.
  • 1888 - Original building torn away and replaces with a new building that turned out to have atrocious acoustics.
  • 1889 - Railroad came to Asheboro bringing new businesses, more people and faster growth for the church.
  • 1897 - Under the leadership of the Rev. A. W. Plyler, a new building was begun. The new church had a bell tower and steeple, leaded glass windows, central heating and a little later a pipe organ.
  • 1901 - New building was occupied. Rev. J. P. Rogers was pastor. The budget of the church was about $600.00 with $500.00 going to the preacher.
  • 1922 - Church roll contained more than 500 names and there was a large Sunday School.
  • 1924 - Cornerstone for present building was laid.
  • 1926 - Present building occupied.
